GRETSCH SYNCHROMATIC 400 (MODEL 6040/6041) Description
- carved spruce top, carved flame maple back, curly maple sides, two double-bound cat's-eye soundholes, wide multiple-binding with gold sparkle on top and back, five-piece maple/rosewood neck, 14/20-fret five-ply white/gold bound rosewood fingerboard with slashed hump block inlays, bound blackface headstock with indents above the E string tuners, pearl angled "Gretsch" logo on top and crossed "Synchromatic" logo slanted between the tuners, three-per-side chrome Grover tuners with engraved buttons, adj. stylized rosewood bridge, harp tailpiece with gold and chrome plating, raised white/gold sparkle bound tortoiseshell pickguard, gold-plated hardware, available in Natural (6041) or Sunburst (6040) finish, 18 in. body width, 26 in. scale, mfg. 1940-1955.
In 1948, the Synchromatic 400 was assigned Model 6040 for Sunburst finish and Model 6041 for Natural finish. In 1951, f-holes, a stairstep bridge, "G" tailpiece, triple bound top and back, single bound pickguard and fingerboard, slashed hump block fingerboard inlays, and a rounded top headstock with no indents were introduced. In 1952, a rounded-top headstock was introduced. In 1955, this model was replaced by the Eldorado (see listing).
