The Les Paul Special was designed as an in-between model to the regular Les Paul model and the entry level Les Paul Junior. First offered in 1955, the initial single cutaway design is identical to the Les Paul Junior introduced a year earlier. In fact, the only differences between the Les Paul Junior and Special are that the fingerboard is bound, it has two single coil pickups with controls for each one (four total knobs) and a three-way pickup switch, and a five-ply beveled edge pickguard. In mid-1958, an entirely new symmetrical double cutaway body shape was introduced, but was not shipped until early 1959. In late 1959, the Les Paul Special became the first Gibson solidbody electric guitar to be re-designated with the new "SG" model prefix. The overall body shape remained the same, but "Les Paul Special" was removed from the headstock and it was cataloged as the Gibson SG Special (this model can be found in the SG Series category).
The Les Paul Special and Les Paul Junior basically followed the same time line regarding body styling changes, it's just that the Special was renamed the SG two years earlier than the Junior. Gibson only produced the double cutaway version of the Les Paul Special 3/4 that was offered in 1959.

Les Paul Special 3/4 Double Cutaway (1959)

The Les Paul Special 3/4 featured an awkward design with a neck and fingerboard that extended far into the body pushing the bridge toward the bottom of the body. The Les Paul Special 3/4 did not sell well at all, and in 1961, Gibson actually discarded several of these unsold instruments to clear room for inventory. This model was renamed the SG Special 3/4 in late 1959.
