- single rounded cutaway mahogany body based on a mid-1950s Gibson Les Paul Special Single Cutaway, set mahogany neck, 16/22-fret bound rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays, black headstock overlay with Gibson logo and "Les Paul Special" inscription, three-per-side tuners, tune-o-matic bridge, stop tailpiece, multi-ply black pickguard, two black soapbar P-100 pickups, four knobs (two v, two tone), three-way pickup switch, chrome hardware, available in Ebony (early 1989 and 1992 only), Heritage Cherry, Tobacco Sunburst, or TV Yellow finish, 24.75 in. scale, mfg. 1989-1998.

This model was introduced in 1989 as the Les Paul Junior II and noted in factory literature as the LPJ2 - a Les Paul Junior with two pickups. In late 1989, they changed the name to the Les Paul Special.
