- double rounded cutaway mahogany body, set mahogany neck, 22-fret bound rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays, black headstock overlay with gold Gibson logo and "Les Paul Special" silkscreened in yellow, three-per-side tuners with white oval plastic buttons (tuners are mounted on a closed-back strip), combination bar bridge/tailpiece, five-ply black pickguard, two black plastic covered single coil pickups, four knobs (two v, two tone), nickel hardware, available in Cherry or TV Limed Mahogany finish, 12.75 in. body width, 17.25 in. body length, 1.75 in. body depth, 24.75 in. scale, approx. 1,200 shipped, mfg. 1959 only.
The double cutaway Les Paul Special was only produced for a year before it was renamed the "SG Special" in late 1959. The guitar remained the same, except "Les Paul Special" was removed from the headstock and a one-piece pickguard was introduced.
