- single cutaway non-carved Les Paul-style mahogany body, set mahogany neck, 16/22-fret bound rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays, black headstock overlay with gold Gibson logo and "Les Paul Special" silkscreened in yellow, three-per-side tuners with white oval plastic buttons (tuners are mounted on a closed-back strip), combination bar bridge/tailpiece, five-ply black pickguard, two black plastic covered single coil pickups, four knobs (two v, two tone), nickel hardware, available in TV Limed Mahogany finish, 12.75 in. body width, 17.25 in. long, 1.75 in. deep, 24.75 in. scale, approx. 4,300 shipped, mfg. 1955-58.

In 1956, a few of these guitars were fitted with a separate bridge and tailpiece, and in 1958, a few single cutaway Les Paul Specials were finished in Cherry Red.
