- double rounded cutaway mahogany body based on the 1959 Gibson Les Paul Special Double Cutaway, set mahogany neck, 20/22-fret bound rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays, black headstock overlay with Gibson logo and "Les Paul Model" inscription, three-per-side tuners, tune-o-matic bridge, stop tailpiece, multi-ply black pickguard, two black soapbar P-90 pickups, four knobs (two v, two tone), three-way pickup switch, chrome hardware, available in Ebony, Cherry (1979-1988), Limed Mahogany (1979-1988), Tobacco Sunburst, Sunburst, or Wine Red finish, 24.75 in. scale, mfg. 1976-1989.

When this model was introduced in 1976, it was considered a limited edition and should have "LE" preceding the serial number, but by 1978 it was a regular production model. In 1988, the name of this model was changed to the Les Paul Junior Double Cutaway Special. Gibson shipped 133 Les Paul Special Double Cutaways with a curly maple top (CMT) in 1979.
