FLYING V KORINA (1958-59, 1962-63 MFG.)

View Details
- V-shaped two-piece Korina body, rubber strip on underside of treble bout, one-piece set Korina neck, 22-fret Brazilian rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlays, 1.6875 in. nut width, pointed V-shaped headstock with raised "Gibson" plastic lettering logo, black bell-shaped truss rod cover, and three-per-side Kluson tuners with plastic tulip buttons, ABR-1 tune-o-matic bridge, STB, V-shaped metal plate tailpiece, layered black pickguard (early models) or white pickguard (later models), two PAF humbucker pickups with black plastic mounting rings, three black bonnet knobs (two v, master tone) and three-way switch all mounted on pickguard, input jack with large circle plastic surround on lower treble wing, gold hardware, available in Natural Limed Korina finish, 1.5 in. body depth, brown oblong case, approx. 98 mfg. 1958-59, parts clean-up 1962-63.
Since this is considered one of the "Holy Grails" of vintage guitars, very few authentic original 1958/1959 Flying Vs are traded today, and it is difficult to correctly value this instrument. However, a clean Flying V will probably bring between $250,000 and $350,000. Each instrument should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and we suggest having several appraisals performed before buying or selling.
The Flying V model was introduced in 1958 and had an original retail price of $247.50 plus $75 for the case. A modernistic concept guitar (along with the Explorer and Moderne) from Gibson, this model had very limited manufacture (98 instruments were produced during 1958-59, no records are available for 1962-63). Original Flying V cases have sold for as much as $10,000! The 1962-1963 period of manufacture was mostly a clean-up of earlier bodies and related parts that were never finished during the first production run, and values seem to be less than the 1958 models. Notable differences between the first production Flying Vs and the parts clean up models include two patent number pickups, nickel hardware, and a black case.

View Details
- V-shaped one-piece Honduras mahogany body, one-piece Honduras mahogany neck, 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlay, 1.5625 in. nut width, pointed V-shaped headstock with large white truss rod cover with Gibson logo and three-per-side Kluson tuners, tune-o-matic bridge, Gibson vibrato tailpiece, large white pickguard that covers most of the body, two patent number decal pickups with no pickup rings, three center foil (early models) or witch hat black (later models) knobs in triangle configuration (two v, master tone), a three-way pickup switch, and a regular input jack all mounted on the pickguard, chrome hardware, available in Black, Candy Apple Red, Cherry, Natural (Walnut), Pelham Blue, Sparkling Burgundy, or Sunburst finish, 1.3125 in. body depth, approx. 175 mfg. 1966-1970.
Some models may have a two-piece body. In 1969, a three-piece neck was introduced. The machined cavity routes were hand-sanded to accomodate the pickguard and hardware. Most guitars have a metal cage in the cavity to reduce signal hum. Two styles of truss rod covers were used with a longer one on early guitars.

Gibson used a five-piece laminated body and they used both walnut and maple for tops, but after walnut tops proved to be more popular, they finished many of the maple top guitars with custom color finishes. Towards the end of the production run in 1982, regular exposed humbucker pickups replaced the V-shaped "Boomerang" pickups, the pickguard was removed, and a gold decal logo was introduced. Gibson offered a promotion where the owner could get a personalized truss rod cover.
