- double cutaway mahogany body (same size as SG Standard), mahogany neck, 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlay, stop tailpiece, blackface peghead with pearl logo inlay, three-per-side tuners with plastic buttons, nickel hardware, layered black pickguard, two single coil pickups, two volume/two tone control, three-position switch, available in Ebony (25 mfg. 1971-73), Natural (approx. 450 mfg. 1971-77), Cherry (most common), Walnut (1971-78) or White (approx. 455 mfg. 1962-68, reintroduced 1972-78) finish, mfg. 1959-1978.
Approx. 750 SG Specials in Cherry finish were produced with Bigsby vibrato (mfg. 1972-77). Approx. 75 left-hand models in Cherry and Walnut finishes were mfg. between 1971-77. In 1965, vibrato became standard. This model was discontinued in 1971, replaced by the SG Pro, and then reintroduced during late 1972 with new specifications - including two black mini-humbucker pickups, 3-point pickguard, and a large tune-o-matic bridge in rectangular housing.
