Some of the earliest ES-335s produced in 1958 have an unbound fingerboard. In 1960, the name changed to ES-335TD. In 1961, a shorter pickguard replaced the pickguard that extended below the bridge. In 1963, 1967, and 1969, some instruments have a single parallelogram fingerboard inlay. Between 1971 and 1979, approx. 130 left-hand ES-335 TD models were manufactured. In late 1981, the original ES-335TD was discontinued in favor of the ES-335 Dot (a return to the 1960 style with dot fingerboard markers). The ES-335 TD Dot is currently known as the ES-335 TD (ESDT). Early ES-335s often have shallow neck angles and accordingly, the ABR-1 bridges on these instruments are shaved much thinner to accomodate the neck angle. Most ES-335s fitted with Bigsby vibratos have a "Custom Made" plate that covers the original tailpiece holes.
