Les Paul: Junior/TV Series

The Les Paul Junior was designed as the entry level/budget model to the regular Les Paul model and was introduced in 1954. The initial single cutaway design was very similar to the Les Paul model, except without a carved top or any binding. In mid-1958, an entirely new symmetrical double cutaway body shape was introduced and produced through mid-1961. In early 1961, the sharp double cutaway SG body style was introduced and for a short while, both versions of the double cutaway Les Paul Junior were produced concurrently. Gibson produced 3/4-sized Les Paul Juniors in both the single cutaway and smooth double cutaway body shapes, but it appears that they did not offer a Les Paul Junior with an SG body style in 3/4 size. While the Les Paul Junior and the Les Paul TV Model guitars are listed as completely separate models in Gibson literature and collector's circles, the only difference between the two is the limed mahogany finish on the TV model. Shipping totals exist for all Les Paul Junior and TV models produced in the 1950s and 1960s, but there is no clear break in the shipping ledgers to identify when the single cutaway model was replaced by the double cutaway and so forth. A total of 19,035 Les Paul Juniors were shipped between 1954 and 1960, and a total of 787 Les Paul Juniors in 3/4 sized between 1954 and 1961. Shipping totals listed in specific models are estimates based on observations in serial numbers between certain body styles.

Les Paul TV Single Cutaway (1954-1958)

View Details
- similar to the Les Paul Junior Single Cutaway, except has "Les Paul TV Model" silkscreened on the headstock in yellow and a Limed Mahogany TV finish, mfg. 1954-1958.
The TV designation refers to the finishes that Gibson applied at the time to the wood, making the instrument stand out better on black and white television with more contrast. A few of these guitars were made with a 3/4 size body. In 1958, double round cutaway body and multi-layer pickguard replaced original part/design. In 1959, the double rounded cutaway horns was renamed the SG TV (see SG Series later in text).

Les Paul Junior 3/4 Double Cutaway (1958-1961)

View Details
- similar to Les Paul Junior Double Cutaway, except has a 15/19-fret fingerboard and 22.75 in. scale, approx. 370 shipped, mfg. 1959-1961.
The switch from a single cutaway to a double cutaway on the Les Paul Junior 3/4 did not occur until 1959. The double cutaway Les Paul Junior 3/4 featured an awkward design with a neck that extended far into the body pushing the bridge toward the bottom of the body.
