In 1961, the new SG (solid guitar) body shape with double pointed cutaway was originally intended to bring a new style to the Les Paul line. But without Les Paul´s approval, they were renamed the SG during 1963. The first two years of SG production (1961-end of 1963) in this series have Les Paul logos on their pegheads or the area below the fingerboard (see Les Paul section).

In 1963, some instruments were produced with an ebony tailblock and pearl inlay. During 1966, a larger pickguard that surrounded the pickups was introduced, eliminating the pickup trim rings. In 1971, the SG Standard was replaced by the SG Deluxe.
