- similar to the D-28, except has scalloped bracing, bold herringbone purfling/top inlay, zigzag back purfling, and a tortoise color pickguard, mfg. 1976-present.
The HD-28 is really an updated version of a late 1930s/1940s D-28 that featured herringbone purfling. Martin also produced two HD-28 models with cocobolo wood (1987), and unknown number of HD-28MP models with Bolivian rosewood back and sides (1990), an unknown number of HD-28N models with scalloped bracing (1989), and one HD-28V contemporary reissue model with Brazilian rosewood back and sides (1984). In 1987, Martin introduced a new low-profile neck on the HD-28 as a standard feature; however, they continued to offer their old neck style through 1989 and these guitars are stamped HD-28P (total production of 1,959 instruments).
