ELECTRIC TUBE AMPLIFIERS: MARK (MK) SERIES

The Mark (MK) Series are the first amplifiers produced by MESA. These were made famous by Carlos Santana after Randall Smith altered a Fender Princeton and Santana played it. These amps represent the company's early efforts and because of that, there are several variations of these models. Some amps may have the 5-band EQ, some may not. Some may have reverb, and others may not. Some models may only be 60W. Cabinets were covered in all different types of woods including maple and koa, and other coverings were available as well. Note that just because our description may not list a feature does not mean something is wrong with the nomenclature to the actual amp. The descriptions we list are the most common "standard" models that were produced.
The reverb, presence, and effects loop controls were mounted on the back of the chassis. Since reverb was optional on almost all models, the reverb control could be added with altering the front of the amp. There were speaker cabinets available to match up with the Mark Series. These were available as a 1-12 in. or 4-12 in. configuration.

- 60 or 100W, 1-12 in. speaker, guitar combo, eight-tube chassis, preamp: 4 X 12AX7, power: 4 X 6L6GC, two channels, optional reverb, front black control panel, two inputs, six black knobs (v1, v2, MV, t, b, m), optional five-band graphic EQ (later models), standy switch, power switch, rear panel: ground switch, slave out jack with level control, optional presence control, optional reverb control, speaker jacks, available in a wood cabinet with a wicker cane grille or white Tolex with a brown grille, includes serial numbers 1-2999, mfg. 1971-78.
These early Boogies are referred to as "Mark I" but this nomencalture isn't stamped anywhere on the amp and it wasn't called this until the Mark II was introduced in 1978. The Mark I has two channels, but they are not switchable - the cable must be plugged into one or the other inputs. Later models have a push/pull bright switch on the 1st volume knob and a push/pull boost switch on the 2nd volume knob. Reverb was optional and this did not become very common until later on. The five-band graphic EQ was introduced as an option later on as well. The rear control panel is very primitive with Dymo stick labeling the various controls and jacks.

This amp is often referred to as the MK-IIA although that was never mentioned in Mesa's product information or on the amp itself. The Mark II along with a few late-model Mark I amps featured a silicon component called a Fetron that was used in place of one of the 12AX7 tubes. When a Fetron was installed, the amp also had a switch that allowed the user to configure the amp for use with either a Fetron or a regular tube. The Fetron was not very popular and was discontinued in the early 1980s.

- similar to the MK-II(A), except has an effects loop and Mesa/Boogie's patented optional Simul-Class system, serial numbers 5,575-11,000, mfg. 1980-83.
Mesa/Boogie's patetened Simul-Class power tube system utilized two separate sets of power amp tubes instead of running all four the same way. In Simul-Class Two 6L6 tubes operate in Class AB pentode and two other 6L6 or EL34 power tubes operate in Class A triode. Simul-Class was optional on the Mark IIB, and models without it will have the standard 60W/100W power switch.

MK-IIC/MK-IIC+

View Details
- similar to the MK-IIA and MK-IIB, except has quieter channel switching and a quieter reverb circuit (MK-IIC) and a more sensitive lead channel and improved effects loop (MK-IIC+), serial numbers 11,001-14,999, mfg. 1983-85.
The Mark IIC+ is widely considered to be Mesa's best sounding Mark amp and is the most collectible. While the MK-IIC and MK-IIC+ look identical on the outside, the difference between the two can be determined by a "+" hand-written in black above the power cord input on the rear panel for the MK-IIC+. Since this is such an easy forgery by someone simply putting this "+" on their MK-IIC themselves, we recommend contacting Mesa/Boogie directly to confirm the exact model of your amp. Mesa built about 1,400 MK-IIC amps before switching to the MK-IIC+, meaning serial numbers over approximately 12,401 are the MK-IIC+ models.
