- Size 1 body, spruce top, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, round soundhole with three-stripe rosette (5/9/5 grouping), ivory top binding (1898-1918) or ivoroid top binding (1918-1923), herringbone top purfling, three-ply back binding with outer ivory layer (1898-1918) or ivoroid layer (1918-1923), zig-zag backstripe, ebony fingerboard with no inlays (1898-1901) or slotted diamond inlays (1901-1923), total production of 238 instruments, mfg. 1898-1923.
The Model 1-28 was also a popular configuration prior to Martin's standardization of configurations in 1898 - every guitar built before 1898 in this configuration should be evaluated and appraised on a case-by-case basis.
