GIBSON Model A-4 Description
- symmetrical body shape, various wood types, oval soundhole with binding, pickguard with ornamental inlay, ebony fingerboard with dot inlay, top and back single body binding, paddle-shaped peghead with inlay, four-per-side tuners, available in Black, Golden Orange, or Sunburst finish, mfg. 1902-1935.
In 1908, the pickguard became elevated, and a smaller peghead with a fleur-de-lis inlay and a solid white soundhole ring were introduced. In 1914, Red, Black, and Orange finishes were all available. In 1918, all other finishes were disc. and only a dark Sunburst finish was available. In 1923, a snakehead peghead was introduced and replaced by a standard sized one in 1928. In 1934, the Amber Red Mahogany finish became standard.
