G & L ASAT Classic Leo Fender Commemorative Description
- similar to the ASAT Classic, except has a double-bound swamp ash body, bird's-eye maple neck, bound maple or rosewood fingerboard, classic style six saddle bridge, two G&L MFD pickups, three way selector switch, and gold plated hardware including pickguard and strings, available in Cherry burst finish, limited edition run of 250 instruments, mfg. 1991-93.
The G&L Asat Classic Leo Fender Commemorative was designed to pay tribute to Leo Fender for his life time of achievement and influence on the music industry. The Commemorative is basically a deluxe version of the ASAT Classic with more binding, gold hardware, Leo Fender's signature with his birth/death dates, and a black stemmed white rose on the upper bout. All versions shipped with gold Maxima strings. It was originally scheduled for a production run of 1,000 guitars, but was shortened to 250 guitars, although the neck plates still read XXX out of 1,000. Six of these guitars were constructed of Australian lacewood/mahogany bodies. These six Lacewood guitars were built for some of Mr. Fender's lifelong friends and some of the big names at G&L including co-founders George Fullerton, Dale Hyatt, and plant manager Lloyd Chewning. At a later date one additional guitar was produced and presented to Mrs. Phyllis Fender. Clarence Leonidas Fender passed away on March 21st, 1991.
