MARTIN MODEL 5-18 Description
- Size 5 body, spruce top, rosewood (1898-1917) or mahogany (1917-1989) back and sides, round soundhole with colored rope pattern rosette (1898-1902) or three-stripe rosette (1/9/1 grouping between 1902 and 1988 and 5/9/5 grouping between 1988 and 1989, rings weren't actually inlaid until the mid 1930s), five-ply top binding and single-ply back binding with rosewood (1898-1932), black (1932-36, 1966-1989), or tortoise (1936-1966) outer layer, black back stripe, unbound ebony fingerboard with no inlays (1898-1902) or dot inlays (1902-1989), three-per-side tuners, rectangular bridge, total production of 2,774 instruments, mfg. 1898-1989.
Martin also produced two Model 5-18G guitars with gut-string configuration (1954 and 1956), three Model 5-18K guitars with koa top, back, and sides (1921, 1937), and four Model 5-18T tenor guitars (1940, 1954, 1961, 1962). This model was available as a special order toward the end of the production run.
