- 12-string configuration, dreadnought body style, solid spruce top, mahogany back and sides, round soundhole with three-stripe rosette (1/9/1 grouping between 1964 and 1988 and 5/9/5 grouping between 1988 and 1991), five-ply top binding, one-ply back binding with tortoise (1964-66) or black (1966-1991) outer layer, chainlink back stripe, mahogany neck, 12/20-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlays, slotted headstock, six-per-side open-style chrome tuners with white plastic buttons, rosewood bridge, tortoise (1964-66) or black (1966-1991) pickguard, available in Natural finish, total production of 10,350 instruments, available as a Special Order, mfg. 1964-1991.
One six-stringed version of the D-12-20 was produced in 1969 called the SD6-20.
