FENDER CUSTOM/MAVERICK (U.S. MFG.) Description
- offset double cutaway asymmetrical body with point on bottom bout, tortoiseshell pickguard, bolt-on maple neck, 21-fret bound rosewood fingerboard with pearl block inlay, floating bridge/vibrato with bridge cover, droopy peghead, three-per-side tuners, chrome hardware, two split covered pickups, two knobs (v, tone), four-position rotary switch, available in Sunburst top/Black back finish, mfg. 1969-1971.
The Custom model was devised by long-time Fender employee Virgilio "Babe" Simoni as a method to use up necks and bodies left over from the Electrix XII model. The twelve-string peghead was refitted to six strings, and the body was recarved into a different design. The Custom model was originally to be named the "Maverick," which appears on some pegheads. Simoni estimated production to be around 600 to 800 completed pieces.
