ELECTRIC BASS: 4000 SERIES

All models in this series have the following, unless otherwise listed: cresting wave style maple body, pickguard, through-body maple neck, 20-fret rosewood fingerboard, fixed bridge, 2-per-side tuners, single coil/horseshoe pickups, 2 volume/2 tone controls, 3-position switch.

Models (21)

- cresting wave style maple body, white pickguard, through-body mahogany neck, 20-fret rosewood fingerboard with white dot inlay, fixed bridge, cresting wave peghead with maple laminate wings, two-per-side tuners, chrome hardware, horseshoe pickup, volume/tone control, available in Autumnglo, Brownburst, Black, Fireglo, or Natural finish, mfg. 1955-1985.
This was the first production Rickenbacker Bass guitar. This model was also available in fretless configuration in the late 1960s. In 1955, only a handful of instruments were produced. In 1958, a walnut neck replaced the mahogany neck. In 1960, a maple/walnut laminated neck replaced the walnut neck. Fireglo finish became optional. In 1963, a bridge string mute was added and Autumnglo and Black finishes became optional. In 1964, the horseshoe pickup was replaced by a single coil pickup with a metal cover.

4000L Light Show

- similar to the 4000 Bass, except has a Plexiglass top with frequency controlled internal lights, similar to the 331 Light Show guitar, mfg. early 1970s.
Originally, this model was released with an external power supply box.

- cresting wave style checkered bound maple body, white pickguard, through-body maple/walnut neck, 20-fret bound rosewood fingerboard with pearl triangle inlay, fixed bridge, cresting wave peghead, two-per-side tuners, chrome hardware, bar/horseshoe pickups, four knobs (two v, two tone), three-position switch, available in Fireglo or Natural finish, mfg. 1961-1987.
This model was also available in fretless configuration as a special order in the late 1960s. In the early 1960s, a few models had ebony fingerboards. In 1964, the horseshoe pickup was replaced by a single coil pickup with a metal cover. In 1965, Natural finish became optional. Stereo output was originally a special order item on the 4001 until 1971 when it became optional.

This was also known as the export Model 1999. Original release instruments were manufactured in low quantities and are rare finds. This was the model made famous by Paul McCartney and Chris Squire.

This was a Limited Edition instrument.

In 1985, pickguard was replaced with one piece unit. This model is very similar to the 4001 with the main difference being the 4003 is meant for round-wound strings. This model is also available in fretless configuration (Model 4003 FL).
