- single round cutaway hollow body, 17 in. wide by 21 in. long, by 3.375 in. deep, 25.5 in. scale, arched figured maple top, bound f-holes, raised layered black pickguard, 3-stripe bound body, figured maple back/sides/neck, 14/20-fret multi-bound pointed fingerboard with pearl block inlay, adjustable ebony bridge/trapeze tailpiece, bound blackface peghead with pearl crown/logo inlay, 3-per-side tuners with plastic buttons, gold hardware, 3 black single coil pickups until 1957, after which humbuckers became standard, tone control on cutaway bout, 3 volume controls, available in Natural and Sunburst (more common) finish, mfg. 1949-1961.
A few early models can be found with unbound f-holes. In 1955, the ES-5 model was renamed ES-5 Switchmaster, and a tune-o-matic bridge, 3 volume/3 tone controls, 4 position switch replaced previous part/design. In 1957, humbucker pickups replaced single coil P-90s. In 1960, sharp cutaway replaced rounded treble bout.

Some production occurred in 1941-1943, though the majority of production was post-World War II. In 1946, a few models were produced with an all-mahogany body. Also in 1946, a black P-90 pickup with non-adjustable pulls in the neck position, a tortoise shell pickguard, trapeze tailpiece with a raised diamond, single bound top and back, unbound fingerboard, pearloid trapezoid inlay, and Sunburst finish were introduced as standard on this model. By 1950, a plain tailpiece and dot fingerboard inlays were introduced, in addition to a standard P-90 pickup. In 1955, a 14/19-fret fingerboard was introduced.
