Size D (dreadnought) guitars feature a lower bout width of 15.625 in., 4.875 in. (14-fret) or 4.75 in. (12-fret) in. depth, 20 (14-fret) or 20 15/16 (12-fret) in. length, and 25.4 in. scale.

In 1988, the soundhole rosette changed from a grouping of 1/9/1 to 5/9/5. The first two D-18 prototypes were actually stamped D-1 (1931). Martin also produced one DC-1 prototype with a carved back (1934), three D-18H Hawaiian guitars (1934-36), two D-18H models with Huda wood (1966), one D-18M (specifications/features unknown, 1961), and one D-18T Tenor guitar (1962). In 1985, Martin introduced an adjustable U-bar truss rod as standard equipment; however, they also offered a non-adjustable square bar truss rod through the early 1990s and these guitars are stamped D-18Q. In 1987, Martin introduced a new low-profile neck on the D-18 as standard equipment; however, they continued to offer their old neck style through 1989 and these guitars are stamped D-18P. In 2012, Martin introduced a high performance neck standard on the D-18.
