Tokai instruments were very good Fender- and Gibson-based replicas produced during the mid- to late 1970s. After 1978 the company built instruments based on these classic American designs, then further branched out into some original designs and ´superstrat´ models. These models are becoming increasingly collectible and are starting to bring some higher dollars. There are a few websites out there dedicated to Tokai instruments. Lawsuits have been filed against Tokai because of their strikingly close copies of popular instruments. Tokai still builds guitars, but they are original designs only.
Instruments currently produced in Japan since the early 1960s.
