Luthier James R. DeCava Born was born and raised in Stratford, CT, and he began playing guitar and banjo as a teenager. DeCava began performing repairs on his guitars simply because there were few repair people around at the time. While spending time meeting others with similar interests, DeCava came into contact with Paul Morrisey and Bob Flesher at Liberty Banjo Co. DeCava worked for them between 1975 and the early 1980s cutting and inlaying mother-of-pearl with intricate designs. Through the years DeCava has built many different stringed instruments including banjos, mandolins, flattop guitars, and solid body guitars. DeCava now focuses on archtop guitar building.
