The Applause instruments were originally designed to be the entry level version of the Ovation guitars. In 1975, the new line of guitars was first offered to Ovation dealers as the "Ovation Medallion." A year later, models under the Applause trademark, they were offered to Kaman distributors. The Medallion name ran into some trademark claim problems, and was changed to Matrix. Matrix "Applauses" carried a list price of $249. In 1983, The Ovation Celebrity (also Korean, with U.S. produced synthetic backs) was introduced, again serving as an entry point to Ovation guitars.
Applause instruments feature the same guitar design and synthetic "bowl back" that the American-built Ovations possess. While engineered and manufactured with the same attention to quality, production of these models overseas is Kaman's key to offering good quality guitars for players on a budget.
Applause guitars are offered in acoustic and acoustic/electric models. The acoustic/electrics offer similar under-the-saddle piezoelectric systems with volume and tone controls as the Ovation guitars. Models encoded with an "AA" are Applause Acoustics, while an "AE" denotes an Applause Electric. The "AN" code indicates an Applause Nylon string model. Beginning in 2013, the "AB" stands for Applause Balladeer and the "AE" stands for Applause Elite, which are both based on Ovation models.

Instruments currently manufactured in Korea since 1980. Distributed by KMC Music in Bloomfield, CT. Applause guitars were originally produced in New Hartford, CT between 1975 and 1979.
