- similar to the Super 400, except has a single rounded cutaway, multi-bound pearloid pickguard, rigid Varitone tailpiece, available in Brown Sunburst (most common) or Natural finish, limited mfg. 1939-1983 (typically less than 25 were produced each year with that number shrinking throughout the years).

Some early models were produced with solid metal tuners. In 1942, no model name was indicated on the heel cap. This model, like many of Gibson's high end instruments, was not manufactured during WWII. In 1948, this model was renamed the Super 400 C. In 1949, rosewood fingerboard replaced original part/design. In 1953, ebony fingerboard replaced previous part/design. By 1957, metal tuners replaced original part/design. Current production instruments (1939 Super 400 Premier in Natural or Cremona Brown) are part of the Historic Collection Series, and can be found at the end of this section.
