The Les Paul Classic model has an inked-on five or six-digit serial number similar to the serialization of the 1950s and 1960s. In 1989, a four-digit serial number was used beginning with "9". During the 1990s, a five-digit serial number was used and the first number indicates that last digit of the year (51245 = 1995). During the 2000s, a six-digit serial number was used and the first two numbers indicate that last two digits of the year (031245 = 2003).
