SWR was founded in 1984 by Steve W. Rabe (SWR are his initials). The company was formed with the idea that their products would serve the creative needs of musicians beyond their expectations. Daryl Jamison was the last president/CEO at the company. They have grew from a company that started with a power amp in 1984 to having a half-dozen lines of amps. They specialized in bass amplication and acoustic amps. In 2002, they won two awards from the MIPA (Musikmesse International Press Award) for making the best bass cabinets in the world and for the Mo´ Bass soundstation. In 2003, Fender Musical Instrument Corporation (FMIC) took over as the owners for SWR. Like Gretsch, Guild, and Jackson, FMIC is now responsible for representing SWR.
