Marshall is given credit for developing the "stack," which is two speaker cabinets and a head-unit stacked on top of each other and the "half-stack" with one speaker cabinet with a head-unit amp on the top. Head-units and speaker cabinets were listed and sold separately - something that no other amp company had really done at this point. The user had several possibilities when it came to mixing and matching head-units with speaker cabinets.
As listed in the dating of Marshall Amplifiers earlier in the section, it can be done by the speakers if they are original. There are also cosmetic features that indicate the year as well. This will be helpful in idenitifying the year of the speaker cabinet.
1962-1966 - Marshall cabinets introduced and included a yellow material made of foam for an acoustic insulator.
1970-1971 - The black baffle board in the back was changed from plywood to chipboard. Chequerboard cloth replaced the basket-weave grille cloth.
1972-1973 - The metal grab handles on 4-12 in. models were changed to plastic ones.
1975 - Black grille cloth replace the Chequerboard cloth in the U.K. It changed over in the U.S.A. in 1981.
The speaker cabinets listed in this section are cabinets that were sold separately and not part of an exclusive series. For speaker cabinets that only apply to a certain series, refer to that series (i.e. AVT Series, Mode Four Series). Many speaker cabinets were available with a straight or angled front. When the same cabinet came in both versions, it is often noted by an A for angled and B for straight. Don't be confused with some models produced in the 1970s where the B suffix indicated caster cups. The Model 1960 is the most popular Marshall 4-12 in. speaker cabinet.
