ELECTRIC: FIREBIRD SERIES

The Reverse Series Firebirds were designed by automotive stylist Ray Dietrich, and first released in 1963. They are called Reverse models, since the asymmetrical body shape is characterized by a longer/pronounced lower treble bout and an extended upper rear bout. Additionally, the headstocks resemble a backwards Fender design, with the tuners located on the right side of the headstock.
Non-Reverse Firebirds had traditional bout designs where the upper treble bout extended below the lower treble bout, and tuners were on the upper left side of headstock.
Firebird guitars were offered in custom colors as well as standard Gibson finishes. The Firebirds were available in these Custom Colors: Amber Red, Cardinal Red, Frost Blue, Golden Mist, Heather, Inverness Green, Kelly Green, Pelham Blue, Polaris Blue, and Silver Mist finishes.

Add 25% - 50% for custom colors (depending on rarity of the custom color).

- asymmetrical hourglass Reverse Firebird-style mahogany body, nine-piece mahogany/walnut NTB, 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlays, layered reverse headstock with pearl Gibson logo inlay, six-on-the-other-side banjo-style tuners, combination wraparound stop bridge/tailpiece with raised integral saddles, three-ply white pickguard with red Firebird logo, single covered mini-humbucker pickup, two knobs (v, tone), nickel hardware, available in standard Sunburst or Cardinal Red, Ember Red, Frost Blue, Golden Mist, Heather, Inverness Green, Kerry Green, Pelham Blue, Polaris White, or Silver Mist Custom Color finish, mfg. 1963-65.

A few of these guitars were produced with vibratos.

FIREBIRD II REVERSE

- reverse offset double cutaway maple body with a large backplate for access to electronics, figured maple top, bound body, three-piece maple neck, 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays, reverse headstock with black overlay and silkscreen/decal Gibson logo, six-on-the-other-side tuners, tune-o-matic bridge, TP-6 fine-tune tailpiece, white pickguard with red Firebird logo, two Series VI humbucker pickups, active electronics, four black barrel knobs (two v, two tone), three-way pickup switch, two mini switches (standard/active, brightness), jack mounted on face of body, chrome hardware, available in Antique Fireburst or Antique Sunburst finish, 24.75 in. scale, mfg. mid-1981-82.

FIREBIRD V REISSUE (MODEL DSFR)

- asymmetrical hourglass style mahogany body, white pickguard with engraved Firebird symbol, through-body nine-piece mahogany/walnut neck, 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl trapezoid inlay, tune-o-matic bridge/stop tailpiece, partial blackface peghead with pearl logo inlay, six-on-a-side banjo tuners, chrome hardware, 2 covered regular or ceramic mini-humbucker (current mfg.) pickups, four knobs (two v, two tone), three-way pickup switch, available in Cardinal Red (disc.), Desert Burst (disc.), Cherry (CH, disc.), Classic White (CW), Ebony (EB, disc.), Heritage Cherry (HC, disc.), or Vintage Sunburst finish, mfg. 1990-2009.

In 1994, Cardinal Red, Classic White, Ebony and Heritage Cherry finishes were discontinued. Circa 1975, a Firebird V "Reissue" (call it the 1st Reissue?) was briefly offered in a gold coil finish.

FIREBIRD V-12 NON-REVERSE

- similar to the Firebird I Non-Reverse, except in 12 string configuration with blackface peghead with pearl split diamond inlay, tune-o-matic bridge/fixed tailpiece, and six-per-side tuners, mfg. 1966-67.

It is estimated that only 272 instruments were produced.
