The 1 Series is one of Martin's middle-level line of guitars. For the 1 Series, Martin retained the size and appointments of their traditional models, but they redesigned all the structural components of the guitar. The most notable change was the cantilevered A-frame bracing pattern but other new designs included a neck-to-body joint, a stress-free neck, beveled front and rear blocks, and an angled bridge hole pattern. All tops featured solid spruce (except the C-1R has cedar), backs were constructed of either solid mahogany or laminated East Indian rosewood, and sides were made of three-ply laminated mahogany or East Indian Rosewood. The first 1 Series guitar (D-1) was introduced in 1993 and by the time Martin split their guitars into series in 1996, the line had rapidly expanded to include several dreadnoughts, jumbos, orchestras, 00s, and 000s. By the early 2000s, many models were discontinued and the series became grouped with the Road Series. By 2005 the entire line of guitars had been discontinued and the basses held on through 2006. Amid the economic recession of 2009, Martin reintroduced the 1 Series in attempts to keep their production line busy and to offer the customer a solid-wood Martin at an affordable price. The new 1 Series are very similar to the original 1 Series, except the guitars are constructed with all solid woods. By 2011, Martin was only produced two 1 Series models. 1 Series models that were produced originally are referred to as the "First Version" and the new 1 Series are referred to as the "Second Version."
