SJ (SOUTHERN JUMBO/COUNTRY WESTERN)

- spruce top, round soundhole, black pickguard, two-stripe bound body/rosette, mahogany back/sides/neck, 14/20-fret bound rosewood fingerboard with pearl parallelogram inlays, rosewood bridge with white pins, blackface peghead with pearl banner logo inlay, three-per-side nickel tuners, available in Sunburst finish, mfg. 1942-1978.
During WWII, Gibson used whatever materials were handy. Banner peghead inlay mfg. 1942-45, disc. 1946. A few early models are found with rosewood back/sides. In 1946, the banner inlay on the peghead was discontinued. In 1949, upper belly bridge replaced original part/design. In 1954, Natural finish became an option. In 1955, redesigned pickguard replaced original part/design. In 1956, the SJ in Natural finish was renamed the Country-Western Jumbo. In 1960, this new designation was again renamed the SJN (See SJN listing below). In mid to late 1962, adjustable saddle replaced original part/design; redesigned body/pickguard replaced previous part/design. In 1969, standard style bridge replaced previous part/design. In 1970, non-adjustable saddle replaced previous part/design. In 1974, four-stripe body/two-stripe neck binding replaced original part/design.

SJN (SJN Country Western, Country-Western Jumbo)

- similar to SJ (Southern Jumbo), except has tortoiseshell pickguard, available in Natural finish, mfg. 1954-1978.
In 1956, the SJ in Natural finish was renamed the Country-Western Jumbo. In 1960, this new designation was again renamed the SJN. In 1962, the SJN was again called the Country-Western.

SJ ROSEWOOD

- rounded-shouldered dreadnought based on a circa 1942/1943 SJ, rosewood back and sides, unbound rosewood fingerboard with double parallelogram inlays, 1940s-style Gibson logo with "Only a Gibson is Good Enough" banner, rosewood bridge with pearl dots on either side, limited mfg. 1991-94.
According to reports, Gibson produced 15 of these guitars with Indian rosewood and 5 with Brazilian rosewood in 1991. 66 were produced in 1992 (all in Indian rosewood), none in 1993, and one Indian rosewood version in 1994.
