- single cutaway ash body, black pickguard, bolt-on maple neck, 21-fret maple fingerboard with black dot inlay, strings through bridge with cover, six-on-one-side tuners, chrome hardware, single coil pickup, two knobs (v, tone), two-position switch, controls mounted on metal plate, available in Butterscotch Blonde, Sunburst, or Custom Color finishes, mfg. 1950-1970.
A few models in 1950 were produced with two single coil pickups and a three-way switch. The Esquire was first announced in June of 1950, and first runs on this series were sparse and no instruments were made between fall 1950 and January, 1951. In late 1951, a routing channel was introduced between pickups. In early 1952, phillips head neck bolts were introduced. In mid- to late 1952, phillips head pickguard screws were introduced. In late 1954, a white celluloid pickguard replaced the black one. In late 1955, staggered-height pickup poles, new knobs, and a butterfly-clip string guide were introduced, and the serial number became stamped on the neckplate. In summer 1956, the logo was placed above the string guide. In late 1958, threaded steel saddles and string anchors were introduced on the bridge. In 1959, rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlay replaced the all maple neck, and eight screws were used in the pickguard. In 1965, a white laminated pickguard was introduced. In 1967, a maple fingerboard became an option. In 1969, a maple fingerboard became standard.
