Scott M. Surine, electric bassist since 1971, combined his playing experience with his graphic arts background in design to offer several models of high quality custom basses. Surine, who holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Arizona State University, works with luthier Kenneth Scott Lofquist (a noted Denver guitar builder). As of 2005, the instruments are now co-built between Scott Surine and Kenneth Scott Lofquist.
Surine basses are owned and played by musicians such as Brent Pearen (Juno Awards), Paulo Roberto Diniz, Jr. (Jota Quest), Lalo Garcia-Maynez (Chuck Berry, Little Richard), Julio Hernandez (Chayanne), David Hyde (Delbert McClinton), Me'Shell NdegeOcello (Maverick Recording Artist), Tiran Porter (Doobie Brothers), Terrynce Rucker (Stylistics), and Reginald Veal (Branford Marsalis).
Surine basses are available with custom options such as customer-specified string spacing, neck profile contouring, lined or unlined fretless fingerboards, and left-handed versions at no extra charge. There is a minimal up charge for other variations such as transparent colors, different electronics packages, and some exotic hardwood caps. Gig bags are included in the price and hardshell cases are available for $250.
All Surine basses share the same body construction as neck-through design, double cutaway body that reaches to the 24th fret, Bartolini pickups and NTCTH on-board pre-amp (9-volt), Gotoh tuners, Hipshot bridge (Surine designed SONOVA® bridge upgrade option), and double truss rods for five-, six-, and seven-string models (a single truss rod is in the four-string model).
