ODYSSEY
Odyssey Guitars, Ltd. was founded in 1976 by partners Attila Balogh (luthier/production manager) and Joe Salley (sales manager). The preliminary guitar model was featured both as a carved top model with body binding and diamond-shaped fingerboard inlays, as well as a non-bound version in mahogany or ash body. In 1981, Balogh and Salley parted ways and dissolved the company.
Salley still retains the rights to the Odyssey name, and sells Odyssey Accessories at the Wes-Can company in Surrey, British Columbia. In March 1983, Balogh was commissioned by Paul Dean (Loverboy) to produce a limited run of fifty Paul Dean models. While these models were similar to the custom handcrafted guitar that Paul Dean himself built, they had nothing to do with Odyssey guitars. Balogh then worked with Ray Ayotte to set up the Ayotte Drum Company. Attila Balogh was killed in an accident in November of 1987. Balogh is remembered as being a true craftsman in every sense of the word (company history and model information courtesy Mike Kinal, April 1997).
