GMP originally produced high quality guitars between 1990 and 2005, and the first prototypes were built in 1989. GMP always favored the latest in technology in their designs, including the use of Sperzal locking tuners, Wilkinson vibratos and roller nuts, and other techniques. GMP used Honduran mahogany, quilted and flamed maple, and select Western alder for their body woods, and options included Seymour Duncan or Tom Holmes pickups, transparent colors, and special wiring. GMP discontinued production and closed their doors in 2005, but guitar air brusher and custom painter Dan Lawrence bought the company in 2009. In late 2009 and early 2010, GMP began producing guitars again and their first models including a 20th Anniversary were released in mid-2010.
