James Dale Jr. started building instruments in 1953 as a high school project. In 1992, James Jr. and Maurice Johnson formed D'Leco guitars, which is a contraction of the words Dale and company. In 1994, D'Leco acquired the rights to build the Charlie Christian Tribute Model. D'Leco also had some association with Samick in 1995 and later with Gibson to build a limited number of Gibson Charlie Christian models patterned from the Gibson 150 with a straight bar pickup.
