Tommy Gumina started the Polytone company in 1968 building small, portable amps with the "Polytone" sound. The popular Mini-Brute amp debuted in 1976 and was followed by several other guitar amplifiers. In the early 1980s, Polytone began distributing a line of guitars and basses that were built by an unknown Japanese manufacturer. Polytone offered a semi-hollow line of guitars called the Improv Series as well as a solidbody guitar and bass called the Contempo Series. By the late 1980s, the Polytone line of guitars and basses was phased out, and they continue to produce guitar amplifiers.
