Metropolitan Guitars was originally conceived by David Wintz (of Robin Guitars fame), based on the idea that others would find the retro styling of the old National Glenwood as appealing as he did. While the original National Glenwood models had a formed plastic body and a bolt-on metal neck, Wintz´ current Tanglewood model features a "map-shaped" wood body, and a mahogany set-in neck. Wintz debuted the Tanglewood series in March, 1996. Two more series, the Glendale and the Westport, followed a year later. The Glendale model has a single cutaway body, more rounded than the Tanglewood, but similar large body dimensions. The Westport model has a scaled down, rounded body. Metropolitan halted production in 2008.
