As part of a reciprocal agreement, the Japanese Fuji Gen Gakki company that produced various Fender models received distribution assistance from FMIC for the Heartfield line. During the mid to late 1980s, various companies such as Jackson/Charvel popularized the superstrat concept: different pickup combinations and locking tremolos that updated the original Fender Stratocaster design. As Fender never had much success straying from the original Stratocaster design (like the Katana or Performer models), the Heartfield models filled a niche in promotion of designs "too radical" for the Fender trademark. Heartfield models were designed both at Fender USA and Fender Japan.
Some Heartfield models featured active electronics or other ´non-Fender´ associated designs. Later production models may also have Heartfield by Fender on the headstock instead of the standard Heartfield logo.
Instruments previously produced in Japan from 1989 through 1994. Distributed by the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation located in Scottsdale, AZ.
