Indianapolis retailer/wholesaler Emil Wulschner introduced the Regal line in the 1880s, and in 1896 opened a factory to build guitars and mandolins under the following three trademarks: Regal, 20th Century, and University. After Wulschner's death in 1900, the factory became part of a larger corporation. Source: John Teagle, Washburn: Over One Hundred Years of Fine Stringed Instruments.
