Luthier Masaru Kohno was noted as being the leading Japanese classical-style guitar maker in author Tony Bacon's Ultimate Guitar Book (1991). Kohno studied under luthier Arcangel Fernandez in his Madrid workshop, and later opened his own operation in Tokyo during the late 1960s. Masaru Kohno died of cancer in 1998. Kohno's nephew Masaki-Sakurai began working for Kohno in 1978, and continued the guitar operation after he died. Masaki-Sakurai currently produces guitars under the trademark Sakura-Kohno.
