Luthier John How builds guitars at his shop in the Sierra Foothills in Northern California. How has played guitars since the 1970s and played in several bands during the 1980s, but he did not get involved into building until he met violin maker John Harrison who helped him build a violin. After his violin, he decided to build a guitar and his first piece was a dreadnought-shaped guitar. How has since focused on smaller body sizes, specifically inspired by Gibson's L Series. How has also gained a reputation for his ladder bracing that he employs on select guitars. How offers guitars in parlor, concert, and grand concert-sized bodies and are available with ladder bracing or traditional X bracing. He also offers an "FP" model that stands for fingerpicker. Prices start at $3,295 for ladder braced parlor and concert guitars and at $3,695 for ladder braced grand concert and all other X-braced guitars. Several options are available as well.
