Hughes and Kettner was established in Germany in 1985. During the 1980s, a tube scare was looming around the corner where it was estimated that tubes would be no longer available and solid-state was going to be the only way to build amplifiers. However, Hughes & Kettner went to work designing a guitar amp that featured the three most important channels (clean, cruch, and overdrive), with effect devices as well. The first product was the AS 64, which was released in 1985 and is also considered one of the first modeling amps. The AS 64 could store 64 presets producing a number of different emulated amp sounds from one unit. Since then, they have expanded their line to include guitar and bass amplifiers in head and combo configurations. In 2006, the Pearl Drum Corporation became the exclusive U.S. distributor for Hughes & Kettner amplifiers, and in 2008, Yorkville Sound became the exclusive distributor.
