GIBSON ELECTRIC: FIREBIRD SERIES The Reverse Series Firebirds were designed by automotive stylist Ray Dietrich, and first released in 1963. They are called Reverse models, since the asymmetrical body shape is characterized by a longer/pronounced lower treble bout and an extended upper rear bout. Additionally, the headstocks resemble a backwards Fender design, with the tuners located on the right side of the headstock.
Non-Reverse Firebirds had traditional bout designs where the upper treble bout extended below the lower treble bout, and tuners were on the upper left side of headstock.
Firebird guitars were offered in custom colors as well as standard Gibson finishes. The Firebirds were available in these Custom Colors: Amber Red, Cardinal Red, Frost Blue, Golden Mist, Heather, Inverness Green, Kelly Green, Pelham Blue, Polaris Blue, and Silver Mist finishes.
