Instruments currently built in Laguna Beach, CA, since 1979.
Luthier Kirk Sand began playing guitar at six years old and played professionally and taught until the age of nineteen when he moved from his hometown of Springfield, Illinois to Southern California to study classical guitar.
His love of the instrument led him to co-establish the Guitar Shoppe in 1972 with Jim Matthews in Laguna Beach, California, which produces some of the finest custom instruments built today as well as being one of the premier repair facilities on the West Coast. The head of the repair section is Mark Angus (see Angus Guitars) who works full-time as well as building his custom acoustics throughout the year.
By 1979, Kirk's twenty years of dedicated experience with guitars, guitar repair and restoration inspired him to begin building guitars of his own design. Sand guitars feature Sitka or Englemann spruce tops, Brazilian or Indian rosewood backs and sides, ebony fingerboards, and custom designed active electronics. Classical guitars start at $6,000 and steel string guitars start at $5,900. For further information, contact Sand Guitars directly.
